Girl (8) is raped and killed on her way to school

A walk to school ends in tragedy for an eight-year-old girl in Ritavi

LIMPOPO – An eight-year-old girl was raped and killed while on her way to school in Ritavi this morning (Friday).

According to provincial police spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto, the girl was walking with friends when she was grabbed and dragged to the bushes, where she was raped and strangled.

“The girl’s friends ran away and alerted the community, who assisted the police to arrest the 30-year-old suspect,” said Otto.

He will appear in the Nkowankowa Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The provincial police commissioner, Lt Genl Fannie Masemola has expressed shock at the incident and the senseless death of the girl.

He thanked the community for their assistance in the tracking and apprehension of the suspect and for not taking the law into their hands.

“Crimes against women and children are one of the police’s top priorities, and we will make sure that this case is properly investigated using all our resources to secure the maximum sentence for this suspect, who committed such a barbaric act,” said Masemola.
