Team Limpopo ready to conquer the world with debate
This debate team is ready to conquer the world
POLOKWANE – Formed in April 2014, the team, which consists of Tumišo Modiba, Jacquin Talane, Karabo Moremi, Mercy Mathiba and Head Coach, Paul Seabi, are already making waves.
The team is from S.J. van der Merwe Technical High School and Dendron Secondary School.
Aged between 17 and 18, they are youngsters who have a bright future. The team says it first entered the South African Model United Nations (SAMUN) provincial competition in 2014, and secured second place.
In 2015, they decided to enter the SAMUN competition again, and with the experience they already had, they emerged victorious and were chosen to represent Limpopo at the nationals.
“On 15 October we flew to Cape Town for the nationals and competed among other provincial teams for five days, with every team debating on the same topics. When the results were announced on Robben Island, we were crowned the winning team among the other provinces in South Africa (Team Limpopo).
“This gave us the opportunity to take take part in the International Conference, along with eight debaters from the remaining eight provinces, which will take place at the United Nations headquarters this coming April,” Seabi explained.
As the only girl in the group, Jacquin Talane explained her thoughts about representing South Africa internationally.
“I feel good because I am the only girl in the team. What I love about our team is the fact that we help each other all the time. If someone doesn’t understand something, the others help in any way possible.
“We also get a lot of support from our teachers, the coach, our mentor and our parents as well. I know we are going to be competing against the best debaters in the whole world but I am hopeful we will do well because we have been working really hard. I think we will do great and make new friends in the process,” she said.
