Chess players get the know-how from a master
Pepps recently held a chess clinic for chess players to help them improve on their game
POLOKWANE – Players from various primary schools in Polokwane attended this clinic.
The Chairperson of the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) Chess Club, Evasan Chettiar, presented the clinic and shared his knowledge and insight with the learners.
Chettiar has competed in various South African and international junior championships, and he is a University Sport of South Africa (Ussa) representative with full Ussa, Fisu and South African Junior Chess colours.
Chess players from Laerskool Pietersburg, Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos, Mitchell House, Curro Heuwelkruin, and Pietersburg Comprehensive School attended the chess clinic.
The idea of hosting the chess clinic came from the chess coach of Pepps, Annatjie Engelbrecht.
Chettair explained the goal of chess, how the pieces move, check and checkmate, setting up a chessboard, basic tournament rules, strategies, and how to improve their game to learners, whereafter the chess players had ample time to test their new found knowledge against each other while receiving guidance from the master player.
