POLOKWANE – Since 2014 President Jacob Zuma’s private residence, Nkandla, has a controversial topic with many citizens of the opinion the homestead was built with tax money.
The saga has caused public outrage with the popular hashtag #PayBackTheMoney a frequent trend on social media and many calling for the president to step down with the emergence of the #ZumaMustFall campaign.
Review took to the streets to ask the people of Polokwane if they think Zuma should pay back the money.
Leshobo Phato says she cannot give a straight-forward answer because she doesn’t watch or keep up to date with the news so she doesn’t know whether he should or not.
Dibete Permly agrees that Zuma should pay back all the money. “Empty promises is what we get from Zuma; he must pay back the money he owes.”
Seepe Mohale says Zuma should not pay it back because he didn’t authorise the upgrades. “The state authorised the upgrades for him, Zuma didn’t, but then again, Zuma is the state,” he says.
William Serebane believes the president should not pay back the money spent on Nkandla upgrades, “if he wanted to, he would have by now”.
