Walking with earphones and chatting dangerous – police

Walking with earphones in your ears and chatting on your cell phone poses a threat to a pedestrian's safety, and the Westenburg police urge residents not to engage in this action

POLOKWANE – This warning follows several complaints lodged at the Westenburg police station of pedestrians whose cell phones were stolen while they were walking with earphones in their ears.

Capt Mohlaka Mashiane, Westenburg Police spokesperson, said the other challenge was hit and run cases.

“The pedestrians are so busy chatting on their cell phones that they do not watch where they are walking and because they have earphones in their ears, they do not hear the motor vehicle approaching. Motorists get impatient and sometimes collide with the pedestrian and drive off,” said Mashiane.

“We plead with pedestrians to be cautious when using public roads and we urge motorists to be patient when using the road and to respect other road users.

“Motorists are also urged not to drive away when they knock a pedestrian as it is a criminal offence.”
