Dog Unit visits pre-school

Excitement ruled at Little Blessings Pre-School on Monday when representatives from the Polokwane Police Station and Dog Unit visited the school.
Learners were given the opportunity to see one of the dogs from this unit up close and could meet Police officials in person.
Members of the Dog Unit explained that Police dogs in South Africa help them with many cases. They get trained to sniff out drugs and explosives, track missing people and engage in other search and rescue operations. They were also informed that the police only use specific dog breeds.
Amelia van Vollensteen, educator at the school told Polokwane Observer that they approached the Police to visit their school, because they wanted to give a token of appreciation to them for their hard work protecting residents of the city. “They told us that they would pay us a visit and that they would also bring one of their dogs, to show our learners how a dog from the Dog Unit is trained,” Van Vollensteen said.
Learners presented the representatives of the Police with roses and chocolates to thank them for their hard work. Educators at the school said that they enjoyed the visit a lot and that some of the learners even interacted with a dog for the first time.
