Boil water before consumption, muni

Polokwane Municipality are currently working with Lepelle Northern Water to identify the actual cause of the brown colour.

POLOKWANE – Residents are being advised by the Municipality to boil their water before consumption.

This comes after complaints of brown water coming out of household taps in the city. The Municipality says that the brown water is a result  of water with high turbidity being pumped out of treatment plants.  Turbidity is when water is mixed rapidly with sediments or soil during heavy rainfall causing the colour of the water to change. In most instances distribution of water is stopped from the treatment plants to allow sediment to settle.

The Municipality says that it has an outstanding record of compliance to the stringent water quality check protocols of the Department of Water Affairs and therefore views this current isolated incident in serious light. They are currently working with Lepelle Northern Water to identify the actual cause of the brown colour and want to fix the problem as soon as possible. They have technicians who are currently collecting samples from affected areas for tests.

In the meantime, residents are advised to boil their water before consumption as a precautionary measure and are urged to report any water quality related incidents to the Municipality’s Water and Sanitation Unit: 015 290 2083/2434/7
