Safeguard your firearms, police warn residents

The Westenburg police urge residents with licensed firearms to safeguard their weapons in terms of the Firearms Control Act

POLOKWANE – This after three firearms were stolen over the weekend in the Westenburg policing area due to the negligence of the owners, according to the police.

In two of the three cases reported, the firearms were stolen out of the owners’ motor vehicles.

In the third incident, the firearm was stolen out of the owner’s safe, a safe which more than one person knew the combination to.

Capt Mohlaka Mashiane, a Westenburg police spokesperson, said firearm owners losing their firearms was a big concern to the police as the firearms may end up in the wrong hands.

“Due to negligence, people are arming criminals in committing serous violent crimes,” Mashiane said.
