Local talent to perform in Switzerland
Elias Ngobeni (25), a talented drummer from Masodi Village, outside of Mokopane, was recently chosen to form part of a group of five artists to represent the country in Switzerland as part of 2 Sides of the beat, during the renowned Kid Fonque Show in June.
MOKOPANE – Elias’ talent was spotted during a broadcast on YFM by Ellen Nicole, known as Kid Fonque.
Elias said it is such an honour and a dream to learn from Kid Fonque and to represent our country abroad. “He has handpicked five artists from across SA from different cultures to show that diversity can be harmonious.”
Elias taught himself how to play the drums when he was only 15-years-old and from there it has become his dream to play in front of 1000’s and to one day be part of one of the biggest and most successful orchestra’s in the world. He said he also wants to learn from and play with the best musicians so that he can sharpen his skills and then come and teach the local talent. “I want to be able to one day give someone the opportunity I have been granted – to make their dream a reality.”
Jeanette, Elias’s mother, said she is very proud of her son as he is the first of his family to travel outside of the country.
Elias said he is practicing extra hard and he can barely sleep at night as he is counting off the days to June when they leave on tour. “Growing up in a small village, I never would have dreamed that when I picked up my drum sticks nine years ago, that I would play in front of more than 50 000 people in Switzerland along with a well-known musician such as Kid Fonque. It just goes to show that one must never stop believing.”
