The Ethical Foundation for Leadership Excellence chaired by former General Secretary of South African Council of Churches (SACC) Mautji Pakaki presented first aids kits to 60 educators representing primary schools in the Dinamo, Kgakotlou, Lebopo, Mamabolo and Mankweng circuits at Makgoka High School last Friday.
The educators also underwent two days of first aid training presented by a local emergency care Institution a fortnight ago. They were taught the basics of saving a life, how to perform chest compressions and how to apply the rescue breathing technique as part of cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Pataki explained that the initiative had its origin in a number of reports received about primary school learners requiring first aid and educators being unable to deal with situation. “We wanted to empower them with health knowledge so that they will be able to respond to any health hazard. They attended a full course on First Aid and they were equipped with knowledge that will also be useful in their communities. Our plea to them is that they must take care of the kits and use them appropriately,” Pataki said.
Makwena Mothiba, educator at Mogano Primary School in the Ga- Molepo area said she was pleased to be empowered with first aid knowledge and looking forward to use it. “In the past we had school children collapsing during classes and we did not know to react in such situations, but I am glad that I will now be able to react to such if such situations arise,” Mothiba said.
Fellow educator, Maleho Lekgothoane from Dipuwe Primary School in the Makgoka area said she will be able to treat injuries of learners who take part in school sport activities. “Many children that take part in sport activities are prone to injuries and when they were hurt we didn’t know what to do. But now we will be able to treat their injuries because we know how to,” Lekgothoane said.
The Ethical Foundation for Leadership Excellence is a South African based non-profit initiative set up to contribute to the creation of jobs through training, mentoring and tutoring of quality leadership.
