LIMPOPO – The Greater Tzaneen Municipality has started with the construction of a multi-million sports centre at Runneymede in Ward 6.

The sport centre, it is envisioned, will keep youth people off the streets and away from crime.

Municipal spokesperson, Neville Ndlala, says the initiative started in Julesburg when the Julesburg Stadium was built through the FIFA Legacy project.

A multi-purpose sports centre which boasts soccer and netball pitches complete with artificial turfs was also built at Nkowankowa Section C.

The centre was officially opened by mayor Dikeledi Mmetle on 22 April 2016.

“Now the Greater Tzaneen Municipality has committed R28 million to a multi-purpose sport centre currently under construction in Runnymede Village,” Ndlala says.

The centre will boast both an indoor and outdoor sports fields which will benefit thousands of people living in and around Runneymede area.

The sport centre which will boast 1 200 meters of palisade fencing will have a standard football pitch with standard size running tracks around.

Both the field and running tracks will be provided with special grass. It will also boast a concrete pavillion or grand stands with roofing.

Ndlala also said included in the centre is a multipurpose hall to be used for indoor games such as basketball, volleyball and netball.

The hall will also house pavillions on the sides as well as ablution facilities.

In the outside and adjacent to the football pitch, the centre will boast basketball, volleyball, netball and tennis courts.

These will be constructed in combos to reduce space and costs.

Since grass will be used in the soccer field boreholes will be drilled for irrigation purposes.

Participants using the facility will have access to change rooms equipped with showrooms, lockers and shower benches. Ablution facilities will be provided for both players and spectators.
