Limpopo police warn public against illegal ID inspections
Police have warned the public against conducting unauthorised ID inspections, saying only law enforcement agencies have the legal authority to do so.
LIMPOPO – Acting provincial police commissioner, Major General Jan Scheepers, has warned members of the public against carrying out unauthorised inspections of identity documents at farms, businesses or other premises.
According to police, only authorised law enforcement agencies have the legal authority to conduct compliance inspections and immigration-related operations.
Warning amid growing concerns
The warning comes amid growing concerns over individuals and groups taking it upon themselves to verify the legal status of foreign nationals.
Scheepers urged residents who suspect the presence of undocumented foreign nationals to report the matter to the police rather than taking action themselves.
“The public is encouraged to report any information to the police, who will ensure that the matter is handled through the appropriate legal processes,” he said.
Arrest and criminal charges possible
Police warned that anyone found conducting unlawful inspections, intimidating people, or attempting to enforce immigration laws without authority could face arrest and criminal charges.
Scheepers also called on communities to work with law enforcement through lawful channels and cautioned against taking the law into their own hands.
