The annual sport derby between Stanford Lake College (SLC) and St Dunstan’s College from Benoni made for a weekend of exciting competition despite trying weather conditions.
SLC played host to the event and the school’s Marketer, Rona McGaffin informed that a variety of codes were contested, all in high spirits and with loads of determination and exertion on both sides. The derby was also an opportunity to show off the school’s new high performance centre with squash being introduced to the programme for the first time. The competition was evenly matched with the final score being 2-2 after both Marc Stirling and Kyle Bain won their matches.
With St Dunstan’s being a prominent force in Gauteng schools’ netball SLC had their job cut out for them. Both the u.14s and u.15s fought back hard in the second halves to lose by 3 goals each. The second team lost 4-17 in a match hampered by heavy rain. The first team showed that they are a force to be reckoned with and a nail-biting fixture saw them two goals down by three-quarter time where after they succumbed to the more experienced visitors 23-33.
According to McGaffin SLC’s tennis players kept their heads high and made the school proud by putting up a fight to the very end. Lara Dando achieved the best score, 6-3, against the visitors.
Unrelenting rainy conditions made for the first team boys hockey match having to be blown 5 minutes short. The game was evenly matched throughout and both sides could have won. SLC scored once in each half to attain a 2-0 victory. The second team drew 0-0, the u.16s won 1-0 and the u.14s won 3-1.
The first girls’ hockey team played well but didn’t use their opportunities. They had to be satisfied with a 1-1 draw. The second team put up a good performance and sent their opponents home with a 0-3 defeat. The u.15s won 2-1 and the u.14 managed a remarkable 4-0 victory. SLC’s rugby teams performed very well in all their matches. According to McGaffin the u.15s played some good, structured rugby to draw their match. The second team completely dominated their opponents and won their fixture by a comfortable margin. The first fifteen took their time getting off the mark resulting in a close game with the score 15 all with 20 minutes to play. The “Honey Badgers’ however finally woke up to win 43-15.
