Water project launched in Mogalakwena
For numerous residents in Mogalakwena accessing clean water is a daily struggle and thus the Mapela Community Trust ,under leadership of Chief David Langa, recently launched the Mapela Water Project.
LIMPOPO – The Mapela Community Trust (MCT) as part of their community empowerment directive launched the Mapela Water Project to help quench the thirst of the community via a solar borehole system. The first commissioned solar water system was unveiled on 10 June in Scheming village.
The unveiling was hosted by Hall Core Water and it was attended by Chief Langa, the Mapela Tribal Authority and headmen from the local villages.
Senior management from Amplats’ Mogalakwena Mine were also in attendance as the company looked at the feasibility of partnering with the Mapela Community Trust to do a roll-out of this offering to all villages in Mogalakwena.
During proceedings a clear message came through that everyone has the human right to clean drinking water and that water should be seen as a commodity instead of a resource to ensure its sustainable development in the region.
This initiative is a positive example of the investment that is being made in local communities around Amplats’ Mogalakwena Mine by the MCT.
The MCT is a fully owned holding company, that manages its mining, social and commercial investments in such a way that the investments benefits the community, who are the beneficiaries. The MCT represents an investment into the future of the community, which will significantly impact the quality of life of community members and it also presents an opportunity to further advocate Anglo American Platinum’s Alchemy vision of supporting sustainable communities around the company’s operations.
