A charge of reckless and negligent driving might be changed to culpable homicide after the operational manager at Matsobane 24/7 Emergency, Michael Maripane (29) died when the ambulance in which he and two colleagues travelled overturned on the Percy Fyfe road just outside Polokwane on Monday morning.
Westenburg Police Spokesperson Naphuri Segobola confirmed that a case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened but that it will probably be changed to culpable homicide after one of the occupants passed on in hospital later the day.
It is alleged that the ambulance was overtaking a heavy vehicle when the driver lost control and the vehicle overturned. The other two occupants were seriously injured. Fortunately there were no patients in the ambulance.
Matsobane Polokwane Branch Manager Godfrey Monyelo said it was a very sad incident and that Maripane will definitely be missed. No funeral arrangements could be finalised while the family awaited the outcome of a post mortem.
