Sewage, overflowing manhole cause concern for residents, shoppers

Overflowing manholes and broken sewerage pipes are causing concern for residents and shoppers at Burgersfort in Tubatse.

BURGERSFORT – Several concerned taxi drivers told CV that these conditions pose health risks to those who shop at Burgersfort Mall and that of taxi drivers and customers at the long distance taxi rank.

“We eat, drink and spend our days next to the leaking sewerage pipe.

“The stench is unbearable, however, we can’t just quit our jobs as we need the money to support our families, so we face the stench and the risks to our well-being,” one of the taxi drivers said.

The drivers said employees of the Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) visited the site but did nothing to remedy the situation.

This is not the only cause for concern as several residents and businesses are complaining about an overflowing manhole next to a clothing retailer.

The Manager of the Market Complex, Liberty Furusa, said the overflowing manhole has been a problem since 2014.

“I reported the matter but nothing has been done thus far.

“There is always water overflowing and running into the complex. This is a big waste of water that has gone overlooked for quite some time all while there is a drought in the province and people struggling daily without access to clean water,” Furusa said.

SDM Spokesperson, Willy Mosoma, said they will look into the matter.

“The broken sewerage pipes are a big issue. We will work hard to ensure all the pipes in Sekhukhune are fixed in due time,” Mosoma said.
