POLOKWANE – A number of disgruntled residents reported that they could not use the swimming pool facilities and complained that there area outside the pool was in an alarming state.
“There are rubbish bags, food wrappers and glass bottles lying around and even some of the swimming pool equipment is strewn outside the premises. This pool needs to be our pride and joy.
“It looks really bad, people visiting the city will see the pool area in such a state and that is not the impression people should have of our city,” Lesiba Manamela, a resident in the area told Review.
He added that the pool area is becoming a hub for criminal activity and people have been using it as a drinking spot.
Polokwane Municipality Stakeholder Relation Officer Desiree Manyane said the municipal swimming pool has not been open to the public because the process to renovates the facility and provide water heaters that commenced in the previous (2015/2016) financial year is still ongoing.
“It will be completed within a month or two.
“The contractor is waiting for the delivery of turnstile which will be installed within the coming weeks,” Manyane said.
She added that the heating pumps have been installed but there are a few leaks and the tiles and walls of the pool need to be checked before the pool will open for public use.
On the issue of the rubbish outside the swimming pool, she said it is rubble from the construction and it will all be removed when the renovations are complete.
About the upgrade of security and the concerns of residents about public drinking at the pool, Manyane said this was a matter for the police.
She did however say the municipality will try to investigate the matter with the SAPS to find a solution to the problem.
