Municipality to clamp down on water waste

Municipal Spokesperson Matshidiso Mothapo says they are taking steps to ensure residents abide by the rules.

POLOKWANE – Over the past few weeks, the municipality has reiterated the importance of saving water as it is fast becoming a scarce resource. Despite their warnings and the consequence of a R1000 spot-fine for non-compliance, residents continue to waste water.

Municipal Spokesperson Matshidiso Mothapo says they are taking steps to ensure residents abide by the rules. “In recent municipal meetings, the community safety officers have been given the duty of identifying residents who misuse water. This misuse is identified as watering gardens, and using water for other purposes than human consumption,” Mothapo explains.

He adds that if residents cannot pay the fine immediately, it will be added to their monthly water and electricity bill.
