Teacher fired following racist rant
A Curro Northern Academy teacher has been dismissed following investigation into a racist comment he posted on social media last month.
POLOKWANE – Tlou Molele was initially suspended pending further investigation after the school was made aware of his post made on Monday, 3 October, which has been removed from the social media site, which included racist remarks directed at white people.
Molele told Review he was happy with the findings of the Human Rights Commission, where he appeared after AfriForum opened a case against him.
A conciliation agreement was signed between Molele and the Human Rights Commission, whereby it is recommended that he refrains from similar actions in future, apologises in writing and do community service.
His post was brought to the attention of the Education Department by a concerned resident.
The Departmental Spokesperson Dr Naledzani Rasila condemned Molele’s actions, saying his conduct was unacceptable and would not be tolerated by the education system.
Stakeholder Engagement Officer of Curro Holdings, Joy Smith, said Curro views the content of the post and the behaviour of the teacher in a most serious light.
“We can confirm that Mr Tlou Molele is no longer in the employment of Northern Academy. Curro views the content of the postings and the behaviour of this individual in a most serious light as social media activity, within Curro, is governed by a comprehensive internal policy which states that all persons using social media platforms made available on Curro information systems and its website shall adhere to the policy,“ she told Review.
Molele says he is not a racist and the post in question was made out of anger after he was involved in an altercation with another teacher.
“I have agreed to attend an anti-racism workshop and will be teaching maths to needy children in and around the city to make up for what I said and in doing so, give back to the community.”
He added that he does not condone hate speech.
