‘Blinking’ nightmare a priority for muni
The traffic light on the corner of Webster and Marshall Street has been non-operational for several weeks, according to a Review journalists investigation.
POLOKWANE – Residents noted the potential risk for accidents to occur and what followed were several complaints and messages on alerts groups.
Review contacted the Polokwane Municipality and spokesperson Matshidiso Mothapo says the municipality is aware of the non–functional traffic light issue.
“There is a problem with the traffic light controller, that is the main reason why the traffic lights aren’t functioning, because we do not have controllers in stock at the Municipality, we have placed an order for the controllers to be delivered to us and they have not gotten back to us to when the will be arriving,” he said.
Mothapo says the municipality apologises for the traffic inconvenience, especially during peak hours. He warns motorists to treat such traffic lights as four way stop signs or use alternative routes, the closest streets will be Suid street or Thabo Mbeki street.
Matshidiso continues by saying that the municipality normally attends to these sorts of issues within 24 hours, but because it is a controller problem this time, it might take longer than they expected depending on when they deliver the controller stock.
“We plea to motorists to always be safe on the roads and especially when traffic light are not operating. We are working on the problem and hope the controller arrives soon enough,” he said.
