Passionate from pen to paper

Hussein O.H. Kopole is considered one of Mokopane's most talented writers

MOKOPANE – Kopole has many books to his name, having recently published his book Before the Big Rains.

Kopole is very passionate about writing and it is clear in the way he expresses himself on the black and white pages. He has written nine books so far and plans on writing more as time goes by. “I plan to write a crime story in the near future.”

Before the Big Rains is a cultural fiction book which is about African beliefs and traditions in the past and how having twins was frowned upon so much that these children were usually killed.

Kopola tells that he wanted this book to be perfect so he went over it three times to perfect and change anything necessary. His book was then published by Authorhouse in Bloomington, UK.

“The twins’ destiny was decided by an age-old tradition long before they were born, but it was somehow altered through the application of wisdom and intellect by human intervention.

“The abnormal in society was normalised by custodians of tradition and the rule of customary law, councilors, and respected village elders vested with authority and the power to decide and act.

“Giving the twins a lifeline and letting them live when they should have been killed without a second thought about who their father is amounted to nepotism and infringed on the right of the one whose destiny was decided in an unorthodox way.

“With the chief’s wife barren, leaving the clan without a leader, the throne without an heir was apparent and the inheritance shone brighter and larger in the direction of the perpetrator.

“If Makgabang was destined to be in Sera’s hands, then the gods had surely erred in their judgement.

“How could they have sacrificed Paramount Chief Thaga at the altar of conspiracy, greed, and corruption? Would Lefa live to see the day and his rightful throne?” reads the synopsis of the book.

Kopole tells that his love for writing started when he was in primary school. “I used to read a lot of books, Afrikaans, Sepedi, English and different languages.

That is where I fell in love with writing. Writing interested me and I wanted to know what all those words meant so I started studying every word that I did not understand,” he says.

He explains that his inspiration comes from Mia Angelo and many other writers.

Before the Big Rains is available on e-books, as a soft-cover for R151 and as a hard-cover for R435.
