GOLD peer educators learn tricks of the trade
The programme, kicked off with the mentor workshop on Monday where 16 mentor peer educators gathered to get the need-to-know information
MOKOPANE – A total of 34 GOLD (Generation Of Leaders Discovered) peer educators from Mogalakwena attended workshops at the RET Centre (Resource Equipping and Training Centre) last Monday and Tuesday, where they were equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to be agents of change.
According to a press release from Destiny Alive, GOLD is a youth development programme implemented by Destiny Alive. Their dream is to raise a generation of young African leaders taking responsibility for their lives, choosing to be the difference they want to see. A generation that will uplift their communities and impart vision and purpose to present to future generations, a generation with infinite possibilities and endless opportunities.

Frans Monene, Ashleigh Pieterse and Imogen Van Wyk facilitated the sessions, giving peer educators information, support and the chance to practice what they’ve learned. Van Wyk said: “I believe one of the greatest investments one can make is in the lives of others, what a privilege to work with this generation. A generation that will break the barriers of the past, who will live by the convictions of their hearts, who will stand for righteousness and truth, a generation who will lead by example, carry hope in their hearts, a generation who will leave a legacy and stand together to bring forth change.”

The programme, kicked off with the mentor workshop on Monday where 16 mentor peer educators gathered to get the need-to-know information on how to plan for their futures and identify the necessary action steps to make it a reality, avoid risky behavior and HIV infection, live according to their convictions and dream about their future. They also learned how to translate their knowledge to their peers.
On Tuesday 18 people attended the senior peer educator workshop. The peer educators received information on how to set goals, stay healthy, work hard at school, how to deal with conflict, how to stand up for what is wrong and to build healthy and honourable relationships and networks of caring.
