Mandela Day celebrated

Nelson Mandela International Day was celebrated world-wide last Tuesday and residents of the city and the rest of Limpopo showed their solidarity with fellow citizens by devoting 67 minutes of their time to engage in a community service. July is also Mandela Month and some celebrations took place on other days during the month.
The Rotary Club of Polokwane donated 20 mattresses to the Paediatric Oncology (TLC) Ward at the Polokwane Provincial Hospital on Friday. At the handover ceremony, President of the club, Chymie Naidoo said that the mattresses will be used by parents of children that are treated in the ward and have to sleep over.
The Do More Foundation visited Samaritan Children’s Home in the city and provided 66 children with meals.
Lebella Meetse, a local borehole contractor, donated a fully equipped borehole to the community of Morebeng. Democratic Alliance (DA) Member of Provincial Parliament, Suzan Phala and DA Councillor in Capricorn District Municipality, Androë Botha attended the handover ceremony.
Models from Limpopo Beauty Modelling Academy visited the Ga-Maboi and Banaphele Drop-In centres where they donated 200 blankets as well as sweets, scarfs, beanies and gloves. The items were raised by Katryn Celliers, owner of the academy during the Miss Beauty SA pageant that took place recently.
A team from Meropa Casino and Entertainment World visited Meropa House at the Reakgona Disability Centre. A clean-up operation included deep cleaning of the tiled floors, windows and ablutions, mowing the lawns and planting new flowers.
William Ramphele, former learner at Ralema Primary School and now businessperson, donated paint and supplied labourers to assist educators and members of the School Governing Body to paint the school on Mandela Day, with preparations starting a week earlier.
Members of the Polokwane Methodist Society spent a day at the Association for People with Disability (APD) and prepared meals for intellectually impaired people housed at the centre on Saturday. According to Phindile Khoza, Christian Citizenship Services secretary, this was a way of thanking the centre for allowing the church to host prayer sessions at APD hall as a part of Mandela Month.
