LIMPOPO – Police have made a major breakthrough at the Groblersbrug Port of Entry after uncovering a truck smuggling stacks of illicit creams worth over R700 000 into the country.
The truck with foreign registration plates was stopped and searched intensively by the police and Department of Home Affairs Customs officials.
“While searching the vehicle, the driver managed to flee on foot and disappeared, leaving the truck behind. Police investigations to trace the suspect and to also determine the origin of these creams are continuing,” says police spokesperson Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe.
During the search operation, the following items were recovered:
– 40 boxes of Betasol cream.
– 2 606 x 30g Epidermic creams, which were concealed under the load of soya beans.
“The truck and these illicit creams have been confiscated,” said Ngoepe.
Meanwhile, in Giyani, police arrested two suspects aged 28 and 33-years-old, respectively, after a business robbery and carjacking was committed at a hardware store in Nkuri village.
It is alleged that four unknown suspects, driving a red Toyota corolla, arrived at the hardware store, aimed firearms and robbed the store and the patrons of an undisclosed amount of money, three cellphones and the store owner’s bakkie and drove off to the nearby village.
“The police were summoned and reacted swiftly by following the suspects and arrested two of them,” Ngoepe said.
During the arrest, the following items were recovered:
– One rifle.
– Four live rounds of ammuntion.
– R520 cash.
– A bakkie.
The remaining two suspects are still at large but a manhunt was launched.
“The arrested suspects will appear before the Giyani Magistrates Court soon,” Ngoepe concluded.
