Using her title to give back to the community
Regina Magolo says it is her passion to help the needy that led her on a path to do more for the community than just her role as a teacher.
POLOKWANE – The Mrs Justice SA 2016 title holder from Rainbow Park is a teacher at Taxila Secondary School and aims to use her beauty title as a means to give back to the community.
“I studied a bachelor of science degree (microbiology and botany) at the University of Limpopo and did a post-graduate certificate in education at Unisa where I majored in natural and life science. It was only when I began teaching at Taxila when I felt compelled to do more than just teaching as I interacted with people from different backgrounds, realising how many people are in dire need of assistance. I realised as a community we need each other on various levels, be it social or physical. Teaching life orientation has opened my eyes to the struggles of others and through engaging with my learners and colleagues I was able to come up with ideas, on how as a community we can help each other to overcome the different challenges we face.
“Initiatives such as community development projects where we give sanitary towels to disadvantaged female learners from rural areas so they can stay in school when they menstruate. These donations will also help to restore and build their dignity and confidence in life which will foster a positive and healthy lifestyle,” she explains.
The 31-year-old beauty queen says although being a high school teacher working with teenagers can be challenging, she loves the profession as she gets ultimate fulfillment when she promotes meaningful lifestyles in the youth.
“Being a life orientation teacher has afforded me the opportunity to instill strong values, positive attitudes and essential skills in the youth which are all needed to succeed in life. The main challenge of being a teacher to teenagers for me thus far has been having to deal with disrespectful learners, yet those who listen to my advice more than makes up for it.”
Regina says knowing your background, accepting it regardless of how it looks and not having a pity party over it is a positive way of looking at life and also improving on it. “Giving back to the community is about compassion and having the utmost respect for others because they are also human and deserve to be respected and heard. Success means different things to different people; hence we need to learn to respect one another in order to live in peace and harmony,” she concludes.
