Rameez Patel moved to correctional facility

Rameez Patel was previously held in the holding cells at the Polokwane Police Station pending the finalisation of his bail application after he was charged with the murder of his mother earlier this year.

POLOKWANE – Rameez Patel, who was charged with the murder of his wife Fatima in April 2015 and whose bail hearing for the murder of his mother in September is ongoing in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court, has been moved from the police holding cells to the correctional facility.

Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, Provincial Police Spokesperson, said they received information about a possible impending escape attempt and reacted swiftly. “There was no move or an attempted escape, but we acted on information received which we cannot undermine. Even if nothing happened, we decided to move him to the correctional facility.”

A court case, in which custody for Patel’s three children was to be finalised, was scheduled for Monday in Pretoria. The children were placed in the interim custody of his mother-in-law, where Patel took them for the duration of the school holiday in October, just prior to his arrest for his mother’s death. Patel said in an earlier bail appearance that the children belong with his family. His mother used to look after the children following the death of his wife in 2015. Patel’s reasoning for his bail application was that he had to look after his children and manage the family businesses following the death of his mother.

The murder trial in the High Court, which would have continued on Tuesday, 7 November, was postponed and Patel will appear in the court again from 22 to 26 January 2018.

He is to appear again in the Magistrate’s Court on 14 November where his bail hearing for the murder of his mother will continue.
