PCS finally gets speed controlled pedestrian crossing

This follows several attempts by the school with the municipality to ensure the safety of the learners.

POLOKWANE – Construction on the erection of a speed controlled pedestrian crossing began on Thursday morning, in front of the school.

Acting Principal of Pietersburg Comprehensive School (PCS), Rudi Fick said the school had appealed to the Polokwane Municipality, to erect speed controlled pedestrian crossings at the school’s main gate and prohibit hawking in front of the school, which up until today, had gone unheard.

PCS is situated at the corner of Grobler and Magazyn Streets and currently more than 1 000 learners between the ages of six and 14 attend the school.

According to Fick, there are no clear road signs indicating there are school children crossing the street and aside from this, learners also run across the street to buy goods from hawkers, underestimating the speed of approaching vehicles.

Fick says the most recent letter to the municipality, explaining their concerns and asking for help, was dated 16 May 2017.

Municipal Spokesperson, Matshidiso Mothapo, said the municipality had, since the beginning of November, conducted patrols around the school to enforce the law regarding street vending. He said he would verify if the school sent correspondence to the municipality regarding the speed humps.

“The municipality has assisted schools that had similar requests in the past. We have an open door policy to assist people wherever possible.”
