The search for one of two lions that escaped from a trailer in which they were transported along the R528 Georges Valley road yesterday (Sunday) continues.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe indicated that two lions escaped while being transported from one animal enclosure to another. They escaped from a trailer being towed by a bakkie.
He said according to an eye witness the two lions were seen fleeing into a pine plantation near Vula-Vula. One of the lions seemed to have injured its leg when jumping from the moving trailer. Authorities were quickly called to the scene and the injured lion was captured while struggling to run up a wet and muddy hill. The other got away, according to Ngoepe.
He added that investigations will determine the exact destination of the lions.
He warned community members in the area to be extra careful and anyone who spots the lion should report to the nearest Police station or call 10 111.
