Tzaneen police sergeant shot and wounded by suspected house robbers

It is alleged the suspects were wearing bullet proof vests, says the police

LIMPOPO –  The police have launched a manhunt for a group of about five suspects, who shot and wounded an on duty police sergeant at about 01:00 this morning (Tuesday).

According to a statement issued by Police Spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, the victim and a colleague were on patrol in the town when they decided to drive to a colleague’s house to fetch a cellphone charger.

“It is alleged that while the one officer was inside the house,  he heard a gunshot sound and looked through a window and saw four men, wearing bullet proof vests, fleeing into the nearby bushes. When he left  the house to investigate, he found his colleague injured and lying on the ground near the state vehicle.”

The victims’ service pistol and a cellphone were also taken during the incident, says Mojapelo.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the same suspects are believed to have been involved in a house robbery at a house at Medipark about 30 minutes later where they held a husband, his wife and a child at gun point. A cellphone and a white Nissan Sentra motor vehicle with registration numbers ADV6067 were taken during this robbery.

A task team comprising members of the TRT, Crime Intelligence and Police Detectives are currently hard at work tracing the suspects and anyone with information is requested to contact the nearest police or call a toll free member 0860010111.
