Transport and Community Safety MEC Makoma Makhurupetje and Moletjie East Pastors’ Forum held a road safety prayer session in Ga-Semenya on Sunday to pray for the safety of motorists and other users of the R521.
Forum Secretary Peter Dikgale said the idea came after nurses at local clinics complained about the number of casualties and injuries they deal with on a daily basis due to accidents on the road and requested prayers from various churches. He said this was the first session but the forum, department and Bahlaloga Taxi Association suggested that it should be an annual gathering on the first Sunday of January to prepare for the year. Dikgale urged all road users to obey the rules of the road and pray for the minimising of accidents.
In sound clips made available to Polokwane Observer, Makhurupetje issued a strong warning to traffic officials who take bribes and motorists who pay bribes. She said it was smart for motorists to accept their mistakes and pay fines to help Government fix roads which will in return minimise road accidents. Makhurupetje applauded the forum for organising such a gathering and reiterated that churches should continue praying for road users.
“There was no way I could not attend because the community is concerned and seeks solutions to the horrific accidents that occur on the R521 and other roads across the province. Speed kills and don’t text while driving. When your vehicle is not in good condition rather opt for public transport. Road safety is the responsibility of all of us and residents should take charge,” she insisted and concluded by thanking all the churches for the prayers.
