uMkhontho weSizwe deputy chair, Teenage Monama, dies

Monama died on Saturday evening after a short illness while hospitalised in Polokwane.

POLOKWANE – The Speaker of Limpopo Legislature, Polly Boshielo, expressed her sincerest condolences to the family, friends, comrades and colleagues of the late Provincial Chairperson of the South African Communist Party (SACP) Teenage (Leka) Monama, who died over the weekend.

At the time of his death, Monama was also serving as the National Deputy Chairperson of the uMkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA).

“The passing on of comrade Monama is a huge loss not only to his family, but also the community of Limpopo, especially his immediate community of Modimolle.

His leadership track record leaves us with a great void, taking into cognisance the sacrifices he and many others made for the liberation of the people of South Africa. I served with Monama for a long time in the Limpopo South African Communist Party Provincial Executive Committee (SACP PEC). We were very close and he was dear to me. He has run a good race indeed. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Boshielo said.

The SACP also mourns Monama’s death; he was the party’s Limpopo Chairperson, the SACP in Limpopo stated on Sunday.

In the statement, SACP conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the Monama family, the community of his hometown Modimolle and the whole of the movement.

“Monama was a founder member of the Congress of South African Students (Cosas) in 1979. He fiercely fought against Apartheid in the 1980s and 1990s until the Apartheid government was dislodged in 1994. He was imprisoned by the Apartheid regime for two years for refusing to testify against his fellow comrades. After his prison term he skipped the country to join the joint SACP and ANC military wing, uMkhonto weSizwe (MK), in Angola. He returned from exile in 1991.”

Monama served in several capacities in the SACP, ANC, and MKMVA and was elected as deputy national chairperson of the latter. At the time of his death he was serving as SACP Limpopo Provincial Chairperson and by virtue of the responsibility, an ex-officio member of the party’s central committee. Monama is survived by children, grandchildren and his mother.
