Quarterly awards to motivate Flora Park Comp High learners

Quarterly awards and extra lessons are among the strategies used by Flora Park Comprehensive High School to keep learners motivated and stick to their school work in order to achieve best results at the end of the year.
Last Monday morning the 20 best performing learners from grades 8 to 12 had the opportunity to shine on stage as they were honoured with badges for achieving good marks in the previous quarter.
The school principal, Joseph Masekela emphasised that the school recognised best learners quarterly to boost their morale. The top three learners in each grade received badges and cash prizes. The first position received R150, the second R100 and the third R50.
“The purpose is to motivate best performing learners to keep working hard and again put pressure on underperforming learners to improve. Last year we did not perform well as we managed a 60,8% matric pass rate but we are aiming for 85% at the end of this year. We have afternoon and Saturday lessons and we are also planning a winter camp for matrics,” Masekela explained.
He added that they were not proud of last year’s results and they were working hard to improve. He reiterated that they want to be among the top performing schools in the province and claim awards. The school has 159 Grade 12 learners this year and Masekela stated that they host parents’ consultation meetings for parents to engage with different subject educators and assess children’s performance. Top three spots were dominated by girls in all the grades and only one boy topped the charts in Grade 12.
The top performers per grade are:
Grade 8: Stephina Machebe, Hope Dagada and Tracy Phaswane.
Grade 9: Claudia Lekgothoane, Nape Motau and Mahlatse Lekoloane
Grade 10: Risuna Rikhotso, Molebogeng Tlomatsana and Meohlapile Dikgale
Grade 11: Maite Mmonwa and Musawenkosi, both position one, Tshomoko Mosweu second and Itumeleng Mathopa third.
Grade 12: Amukelani Phakula, Reamogetswe Nong and Khanyisa Maswanganyi.
