Police condemn the burning of houses in the Ga-Sekgopo area

This follows the recent disruptions in the area where the R81 road between Polokwane and Giyani was barricaded with burning tyres and rubble

POLOKWANE – Saps acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Jan Scheepers, has condemned in the strongest possible terms, the violent nature of protest action by the community of ga-Sekgopo in the Modladjiskloof policing area outside Tzaneen.

This follows the recent disruptions in the area where the R81 road between Polokwane and Giyani was barricaded with burning tyres and rubble. Public Order Police (POP) were deployed to the area to bring the situation back to normal.

According to police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, a group of residents went on a rampage on Tuesday night, 12 June, attacking and burning houses of a fellow residents.

He adds that the motive behind this incident is still not clear at this stage but police investigations will tell.

“Lawlessness will not be tolerated at all and if residents have complaints, they should raise them legally and peacefully without engaging in any violent action. Those who continue with these barbaric acts are going to be dealt with mercilessly and without compromise,” General Scheepers concluded.

No arrests have been made as the suspects involved are still unknown.
