Samaritan shares disabled boy’s tale
Mopani District Municipality Mayor, Nkakareng Rakgoale, called on parents living with disabled children not to hide them as they are denying them opportunities for better future.
LIMPOPO – Rakgoale made this appeal during a recent visit to Hlulani Mkhabele (5) in Section F in Giyani, a disabled boy who was born without a leg and a malformed hand.
“Parents must not hide their children who were born with disabilities. If they hide them, they will miss the good Samaritans who can reach out to their children to help them and give them access to better opportunities,” she said. “I was touched by Hlulani’s story after it was shared on Facebook by Pfuxi Chauke. I immediately pledged to visit the family to find out how we can help the child.”
During her visit, Rakgoale gave food parcels to the family and appointed a task team comprising occupational therapist, Dr Themba Shivambu, a ward councillor, portfolio head of social services at Mopani District Municipality and the girl who shared Hlulani’s story on Facebook, Pfuxi. Rakgoale also discussed Hlulani and his family’s situation with a social worker and asked them to assist the family with food and a disability grant.
Pfuxi said she was touched by the condition that the young boy was living in as he had to crawl whenever he was playing. This prompted her to ask on Facebook for a good Samaritan willing to donate a wheelchair for the boy.
“I was so touched because I used to see him crawling when he was playing with other kids. Seeing as it is winter now and too cold for him to be crawling around on the ground when playing, I wanted to get help for him and shared his story on Facebook and Mayor Rakgoale came to his rescue,” she said.
Both Hlulani’s parents, Mozambican nationals, are unemployed.
