Save water where you can, says Dept of Water

POLOKWANE – The department of water and sanitation are urging people to once again look at saving water and using it sparingly.
In a statement released the province’s average dam levels are at 75.5% this week, showing a decline compared to last year this time, when readings recorded 77.4%.
In terms of summarising the Water Management Area (WMA) for Limpopo, water levels in the province last year were 88.5% compared to this year’s 77.3%.
Olifantspoort stands at 73.5%, declining from last year’s 73.7 %.
• In Polokwane, Water Supply Systems is at 95.7%, a slight decline when compared to 95.8% last week, but still in relieving state compared to last year this at 63.5%.
• The Luvuvhu Water Supply System has also slightly improved, sitting at 98.9% from last week’s 98.1%.
• The Vhembe District area of the province is still in a satisfactory state with regard to water storage, with Nandoni Dam currently standing at 99.90% this week.
• Ebenezer Dam, which supplies majority of the communities around Polokwane is currently at 87.87% this week.
• Tzaneen Dam, which mostly helps farmers in the Mopani District with irrigation has declined to 40.16% from last week’s 40, 87%, The Department calls on farmers to always save water too.
• Mokolo Dam, in Lephalale in the Waterberg District, slightly decreased by 0.32% from 89,51% last week to 89,19% this week.
• De Hoop Dam which supplies communities in the Sekhukhune District, declined from 91.76% last week to 90,61% this week with a decrease of 1.15%.
“Although the provincial storage is at satisfactory percentage, the province still needs to continue to implement water restrictions so that reliable water provision is sustained until the next summer rains. Water is a scarce resource and catalytic towards economic development and it must therefore be conserved at all times,” The Department’s Regional Head in Limpopo, Lesiba Tloubatla said.
The Department are appealing to the people of the province to continue saving water.
