Malesela recalls being at the 16th Madiba Memorial Lecture

POLOKWANE – An opportunity to be in the audience during the 16th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture delivered by the former US President, Barrack Obama, reminded one about what Madiba himself said on the occasion of the 46664 concert and the year of his 90th birthday: “It is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is in your hands now”.

As we celebrate Madiba’s centenary and aspire to be the legacy, these words should be a reminder that it is up to us now to take action towards building a better nation. I also tend to agree with my former radio broadcast lecturer at the erstwhile Technikon Northern Gauteng, Albi Modise, on the following which he posted on Facebook recently: “At some point we will have to, as a nation, move beyond evoking the memory of Tata Mandela to make sense. We have to create new milestones and raise the bar higher”.
We are also in agreement that Madiba will continue to be an inspiration.
The Public Relations Institute of Southern Africa (Prisa) is also using its 61 year heritage towards striving to remain relevant through refreshment of its value proposition to members and thought leadership.

As President Cyril Ramaphosa said: “I keep hearing Madiba’s voice saying, I am sending you to build the nation”. Ramaphosa is using Madiba’s inspiration and the voice in his ear to roll up his sleeves and take action towards building a better South Africa.
Barrack Obama in his speech said something insightful: “I thought we would have learnt from Madiba that we are all human and our differences are superficial, but I still have to stand here to deliver a lecture to remind you of that”. In the public relations and communication management context, Obama’s words: “We cannot collaborate if we do not agree on facts”, should be a reminder of the need to check compatibility on ethical conduct and professional standards in terms of a consultancy and client relationship.
In the same spirit of Madiba, Haile Selassie’s words: “It is both the duty and responsibility of the world’s fortunate few to help fulfil the legitimate aspirations of the unfortunate many”, are worth taking note.
