Switching it up for a new challenge

PEMPS' former Gr R teacher, Noreen Banda, decided to rise to the challenge and try her hand at educating young minds in Gr 1.

POLOKWANE – Noreen followed her passion for teaching by studying education management through Unisa.

“I studied through Unisa’s distance training programme which allowed me to balance being a mother and wife while working at PEMPS as Gr R teacher. It was difficult but I persevered and came through,” she explained.

The 30-year-old, mother of two spoke to BONUS about her transition from Pemps Gr R to Pemps Gr 1 and said it was both a sad and happy moment for her.

“I loved the Gr R’s a lot and it was heartbreaking for me to leave them. I also love my new class, however, and we have bonded a great deal. I love teaching them and I enjoy working here. I adore the Principal, Desiree Conradie, as a mentor and role model and she has assisted me greatly. Her advice and guidance together with Carol Shilubane, Angie van Wyne and May Mayat has made my teaching as a Gr 1 teacher incredible,” she added.

She is a Gr 1 life skills, mathematics and English teacher at PEMPS and holds a B.Ed qualification from Unisa with 30 distinctions.

She added she loves teaching as seeing how the children start to understand and grow from the first time she meets them is a priceless feeling.

“It brings me joy to see them progress and learn. Teachers play a vital and important role in the communities because of their dedication to teach, bond, equip and educate learners. I believe teachers are selfless people who build the nation through their dedication of educating the future generation,” she said.

Noreen added all teachers must be firm and instil core values in learners which include respect, transparency, accountability, solidarity and integrity which will will encourage a conducive environment to foster a healthy relationships in the class and outside.
