Flora Park Comprehensive High School Grade 9 learner Keith Chituni is among a team of ten speakers who will debate issues affecting youth during the national Nelson Mandela Children’s Parliament at a venue and dates yet to be confirmed.
The provincial team, made up of learners from each district, was selected at the recent children’s parliament held at a venue in Ster Park. Keith said he had to represent a group of eight at the provincial event for him to secure a spot in the provincial team. He further stated that the group will meet next Monday to choose the ambassador, adding that he was confident that he would be the one chosen to present their argument on the national stage.
“This is my first time in the competition and I am delighted to make it to the nationals. This was Madiba’s dream to afford children an opportunity to raise their concerns. With the bad financial state the country is in at the moment, our arguments should be factual but realistic at the same time,” Keith explained.
He indicated that issues affecting youth include gangs, rape, crime, lack of proper rehabilitation centres and public health facilities among others.
Principal Joseph Masekela praised Keith for his achievement and stated that they were confident that he would represent both the school and province well.
