Outstanding sportsman and Grade 12 learner at Curro Heuwelkruin, Ofentse Maubane needs no introduction when it comes to the game of rugby. Most recently he once again confirmed his aptitude in the game by being selected to the South African u.18 sevens squad that will participate in the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires from 7 to 14 October.
“Being chosen to represent team South Africa has been a whirlwind ride as we already completed a rigorous training camp at Stellenbosch Academy of Sport last weekend,” he said.
Maubane has a strong history of accolades setting him up for grand success. He captained the u.17 Limpopo sevens team last year and was selected for the u.17 South African sevens team the same year while also making the cut for the u.18 15-man Limpopo Craven Week team. Earlier this year he was selected for the national u.18 sevens squad participating in the Windhoek International 7’s Tournament in March.
“It is once again a great honour to be part of the national u.18 sevens team. It is another step towards reaching my dream of joining the Springboks Sevens Academy. Playing alongside the likes of Cheslin Kolbe, Branco du Preez, Seabelo Senatla, and Rosko Specman would be a dream come true,” he said, adding that the Youth Games might pose some challenges yet one has no choice but to face them head-on.
“Watching Ofentse’s nifty sidestepping, solid defence and dynamite pace on the field is something we look forward to during every training session. It’s seldom that you come across such incredible young talent,” rugby coaches André Hay and Eben Lingenfelder commented.
