Pregnancy exercises to help you induce labour

Local Yoga Instructor, Rose Kekana, who hosts a few pregnancy classes at her studio, gives some tips on what kind of exercises to do to help you induce your labour.

POLOKWANE – Preparing for labour can be nerve wrecking, especially for first time mothers. “Exercising during pregnancy helps and assists with blood circulation, and most importantly it helps with labour. It usually helps going for a walks in the park or around your yard if it’s big enough. Try taking a walk every day with your partner, if you don’t want to do it alone, it’s a good practice for overall fitness,” Local Yoga Instructor, Rose Kekana said.

She adds that squats are very good exercises to help with labour, aside from helping the pelvis to spread to prepare the body for birth, the full squat position helps baby engage deeper into the pelvis. “Spend about five to ten minutes doing squats every hour or two if you’re always home,” she added.

Though it will hurt a bit, Rose adds that leaning against the wall with your back, in a sitting position for about five to ten minutes also helps with labour.

She further adds that sitting on a bouncy ball and gently rolling the pelvis to make circles helps to relax the low back and hip muscles. “When bouncing gently on the ball, this can give baby a gravity-assisted push towards the exit. The same movements on the ball provide great relief during labor,” she said.

She concludes that bouncy exercises can help coax the baby deeper into the pelvis. “When doing these exercises, be more careful, try avoiding high-impact exercises, you can still do low-impact exercise that includes a little bounce, such as lunges and squats etc,” she concluded.
