Stray elephant killed and slaughtered near Malamulele

SanParks and the National Police Minister Bheki Cele have condemned the killing of one of three stray elephants by the Shigalo village in Malamuele.

LIMPOPO – The three stray elephants were sighted near Mutale in the Vhembe District on 22 October.

Locals collecting wood spotted two of the elephants outside the village last Tuesday morning and managed to kill the one elephant. The second elephant managed to escape but according to residents, has been spotted in the area.

Shigalo resident Khazamula Mathebula, told CV he was happy that the one elephant was killed as they now have meat to eat. “Meat is very expensive, so now we have food for our families.”

SANPARKS have urged residents to instead call the rangers whenever they spot the remaining two elephants and Cele has indicated that police are to investigate and arrest all those who involved in the killing of the animal.
