New minimum wages for domestic workers
New minimum wages for domestic workers, valid with immediate effect, was published in the Government Gazette no 42077 dated 3 December.
POLOKWANE – According to the Department of Labour, domestic workers, who work more than 27 ordinary hours, should be paid a minimum hourly rate of R13,69 (up from R13.05 in 2017/18); weekly rate R616.03 (up from R587.40); and a monthly rate of R2 669.24 (up from R2 545.22).
Domestic workers who worked 27 ordinary hours per week, or less, should be paid a minimum hourly rate of R16.03 (up from R15.28); weekly rate R432.78 (up from R412,60); and monthly rate of R1 875.22 (up from R1 787.80).
The new minimum rates will be applicable until 30 November 2019.
Pres Cyril Ramaphosa also announced that the national minimum wage of R20 per hour will be implemented as from January 2019. He described it as an important part of a broader engagement among social partners on how to reduce wage inequality and promote labour stability in South Africa and a decisive step towards the achievement of a living wage and a more equal distribution of income and wealth.
