Apparent murder-suicide claims the lives of local Letsitele teacher and businessman

Limpopo police say the motive behind the incident is not clear at this stage but domestic violence may not be ruled out

LIMPOPO – Police in Limpopo are condemning continuous acts of violence perpetrated against women in the province.

This follows an apparent murder-suicide that took pace on Tuesday morning, 8 January in Ntsako village in the Letsitele Policing area outside Tzaneen where a female educator was shot and killed.

Police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe says the woman, who was a teacher at Nyatshiri Primary School, was with her boyfriend near the local scrapyard when people heard gunshots coming from where the two were standing.

Upon investigating, residents found the woman dead and her boyfriend ran away and disappeared.

“Police were notified and began tracing the suspect. Within a few hours of hunting, the woman’s boyfriend (45), who is a local businessman, was found dead in his house in Nkowankowa with a gunshot wound and the firearm lying next to his body,” Ngoepe explained.

Police in Letsitele have since opened a case of murder following the death of the female and in Ritavi, police have opened an inquest docket for the death of her boyfriend.

Ngoepe added that the motive behind the incident is not clear at this stage, but domestic violence may not be ruled out

Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba says he is concerned about domestic related incidents remaining prevalent in certain areas of the province.

“Domestic related problems should be dealt with by local professionals who will provide appropriate intervention. This is better than resorting to violence or harming each other,” concluded Ledwaba.
