Ivy Park learners share thoughts on being chosen for the Limpopo Hockey team
Some of Laerskool Ivy Park's u/12 and 13 hockey players have made it to the Limpopo Hockey team and are set to represent the province during the regional hockey trials which will take place in the North West in June.
POLOKWANE – BONUS spoke to some of the hockey enthusiasts to find out how they managed to keep their sports spirits up so that they play fair a fair game and how they feel having gotten Limpopo colours:
Olubanzi Mlangeni is a striker and says he enjoys and loves hockey. “It’s a fun sport and one day I want to be one of the best players in the country. As a striker I must be fast and ensure that the ball is always on our side, which is why I must improve on my running skills. I jog and play soccer too to help with my running,” he added.Kamo Mathebula is a defender and says his main role is stopping the ball to ensure that the other team doesn’t score. “My job is to regain possession of the ball for my team so that we can play to score. I am very happy that I have made it to the Limpopo hockey team as this shows that I am growing as a player,” he added.Mathari Selala says she feels honoured as the only female from her school to have been selected and is determined to prove and show that she earned her spot in the team through hard work, dedication and sportsmanship. “When I first started playing hockey, I was nervous because the sticks were intimidating and I wasn’t sure if I would be able to manage the position that I play often, which is a keeper, but I did,” she said.Makwena Setati, a midfielder, says that he is very happy for making the Limpopo team. “As a midfielder, my role in the team requires me to always be on my toes as I have access to all parts of the field. I am happy that I made it to the Limpopo team and I will focus and play hard so that I can make my school proud and myself,” he said.Kutso Maleka says he has learnt how to improve on his skills. “Hockey is a fun sport and when I first started playing, I had no idea what what was going but as time went on I learned a lot from my coach and my teams mates as well as other players from other schools. I am very happy for making it to the Limpopo team and proud of my achievements,” he explained.
