Mitchell House held its annual Teachers’ Day with the aim to motivate as well as broaden educators’ knowledge and teaching skills. The event held at the school on Saturday was not only meant for educators employed by Mitchell House but open to all interested educators from private and public schools across the province.
Headmaster Andrew Cook said it was helpful to host such gatherings and that they had invited speakers such as Ian McLachlan who spoke about cognitive development and Mathematics teaching mechanisms. Craig Carolan focused on the Intermediate Phase, Anthony Egbers shared knowledge on information technology, Joanne Peers highlighted special needs for enrichment centres, and psychologist David Goncalves urged attendees to discover their full potential.
Addressing the audience, McLachlan said learning was social and emotional and required both learners and educators to be socially and emotionally well for them to excel academically.
He further indicated that primary education is all about making sure that all learners succeed whereas high schools are about identifying learners’ skills and which subjects they are good at to help one choose a career wisely.
McLachlan concluded by saying there was no excellence without a sense of belonging.
