Schools engage in fierce battle at debate tournament

Mitchell House provided the venue for a schools debating tournament on Saturday with the teams of Eagle’s Nest Christian School and Thengwe Secondary School emerging as winners in the senior and junior categories respectively.
Teams from Pepps College, Mitchell House, Capricorn High School, Hoërskool Noorderland, Flora Park Comprehensive High School and Motse Maria, Milton Mpfumedzeni, Hanyani Thomo, Frans Mohlala, Taxila, Kgakoa and Mamolemane secondary schools took part.
The tournament had a category for senior learners in Grades 10 to 12 and another for juniors in Grades 8 to 9.
The motions debated by the seniors were ‘Children that pass a national civil test should vote’, ‘Latin America should grant blanket asylum to Venezuelans’ and ‘Regretting the narrative that motherhood is fulfilling’.
The juniors debated on ‘Pay housewives/husbands for their work done’, ‘Not granting patents for green technology’ and ‘Regretting the influence of political polls’. Eagle’s Nest Christian School scored three wins and 597 points, while the team of Thengwe Secondary School obtained three wins and 614 points.
