Phungo’s fine art leaves people ‘speechless’
Just give him A3 white paper and a pencil and you'll be amazed.
LIMPOPO – The 22-year-old self-taught artist, Thabelo Phungo, from Khubvi outside Thohoyandou is eager to establish himself in the art industry.
This young man possesses amazing artistic skills that leave people speechless. You just have to take a closer look to see that his drawings aren’t photographs.
Phungo said that he started drawing at a tender age.
“My mom once told me that when I was still in preschool, I once drew something that left my teacher speechless.
“In primary school my teachers motivated me to continue drawing,” Phungo added.
Phungo used to draw cars, but it changed when he started to enjoy drawing people.
“It’s really amazing to see a sketch of yourself. I didn’t focus as much on drawing in the past, because education was important.
“I used to only draw in my free time,” Phungo said.
He drew inspiration from a well-known artist, Bono Siaga.
“She encouraged me a lot to use my talent. Since then art to me is very important,” he said.
He recently drew the Leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema and President Cyril Ramaphosa. His drawings costs R250.
He said that his family is very supportive.
“My family supports me a lot. Every time when I finish a drawing, they congratulate me. They also buy me paper to draw on. It shows that they are happy with my work.”
His dream is to have his own art gallery. “I want people to come and see my work and help young people to use their talent. In future I would like to use paint as an alternative,” he said.
He studied a diploma in electrical engineering at Vhembe TVET College. More about him on his Facebook page Phungo Thabelo.
