Stanford Lake College (SLC) recently hosted the seventh annual Wik Memorial Triathlon, in memory of former SLC staff member, Wik van der Walt.
According to the school’s marketer, Beth Coetzee the event was a spectacular success with over 450 athletes contesting in what she described as a true test of endurance.
The popular Stanfordian race, only for entrants who turn 18 by 31 December 2019, consists of a 1 km swim, 24 km mountain biking stage and 10 km trail run.
The Wik, only for entrants who will at least be 16 on 31 December 2019 or 12, if participating in a team of 3, stretches over
20,5 km.
A number of SLC athletes (pupils and staff) competed in teams and individually. Among the participants who made their presence felt was Gunther Katzke, Grade 10, who finished fourth overall in The Wik and was the runner-up in the Junior Individual Wik.
David Pullinger, Grade 12, finished third in the Junior Individual group. Casper Venter, Grade 12, showed his mettle when finishing third in the more challenging Stanfordian race.
Among the girls Ani Gutiérrez-Hernandez, also Grade 12, finished second overall in the ladies category of the Stanfordian.
Lia Revelas and Courtney Penrose, both Grade 11, were the winner and runner-up in the Junior Girls category respectively.
Educator Steve Willson finished fifth overall in the Stanfordian.
