Checkers responds to viral video stating their hot cross buns are alcohol free
A video doing the rounds on social media showing a breathalyzer machine’s readings being altered after eating a hot cross bun has sent social media into a frenzy.
POLOKWANE – Retail giant Checkers have responded to a viral video of a false-positive breathalyser reading after a police officer consumed one of their hot cross buns.

According to a statement released, Checkers says consumers have been inundating them with requests for its hot cross bun recipe and clarity on the breathalyser reading. Consumers have also been placing bulk orders and want the hot cross bun range to be extended to Checkers LiquorShops and even to be sold all year round.
As a result, the retail giant have confirmed that their sought-after hot cross buns are alcohol-free and are only made with stone ground flour and the finest quality natural ingredients.
“The false-positive reading in the video is most probably due to the yeast and fruit which may cause inaccurate breathalyser readings as was first reported in Australia in January 2019,” the statement read.
Earlier, Review spoke to Simon Zwane, the spokesperson for the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) who said they are aware of the video but says the equipment used is not the equipment used to prosecute drunk drivers.
“There is a process that one has to go through. Results obtained on a screening device, like the one in the video, have to be validated on an actual EBAT machine or through blood testing,” he explained.
Zwane went on to say that people should not panic, but at the same time, should not drink and drive. “Motorists should not drink and drive and use this as an excuse, thinking they’ll get away with it,” he concluded.
