A man convicted on charges of rape, armed robbery and sexual assault was sentenced to a lengthy jail term by the Burgersfort Regional Court last week.
Referring to the matter, Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe indicated that a 45-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment plus 20 years for the rape of his 11-year-old niece and 20-year-old cousin in 2012 as well as a case of sexual assault and robbery of another woman in 2016.
Ngoepe reminded that the man was convicted of the rape of his niece inside her mother’s house on 28 January 2012. He was also found guilty on a charge of the rape of his cousin in 2014 while she was collecting firewood from a nearby bush.
He threatened her with a panga and raped her, according to Ngoepe.
He further indicated that the man was also convicted of robbery at Maandagshoek in 2016 where a 48-year-old woman was stabbed with a knife and robbed of her cell phone. He threatened her with a knife with the intent to rape her. A fight broke out between the two resulting in the victim being stabbed in the arm, according to Ngoepe.
The man was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape, another 12 years for rape, five for armed robbery and three for sexual assault.
In a separate matter Rofhiwa Mulaudzi (26) was sentenced by the Limpopo High Court sitting in Thohoyandou to an effective 60 years imprisonment after he was convicted on charges relating to robbery with aggravating circumstances and kidnapping which he committed during 2015 in the Levubu and Vuwani policing areas.
Provincial Police Commissioner Nneke Ledwaba congratulated investigating officers in both matters for a job well done.
“We hope that these sentences will bring closure to all victims and that it will serve as a deterrent to all criminals out there that crime does not pay,” Ledwaba was quoted to have said.
